I'll try to compare this with flying a plane on sight and on instruments. On sight you need your goal, some landmarks to recognize, not the worst weather and fuel and up you go. On instruments, where you can't see the ground, maybe at night, you need more upfront alignment on what to do in certain situations. And you need to watch the gauges more closely as you can't see the ground. The end result probably is landing at the same airport. However even when flying on sight you can get lost a bit, but with the added training of IFR and a good set of if-this-then-that rules the overall experience can be safer and more enjoyable.

Ok. There's now so many metaphors in it, but I hope you get my meaning. 😬
